Four suspected pirates approached the ship in a skiff and a hook ladder, the Maersk said in a statement Tuesday. There are two reasons why it is unlikely a large commercial US flagged ship will ever be hijacked again in the Indian Ocean. The first reason is because there are so few US flagged ships, and the second reason is because US flagged ships carry armed security teams funded by the maritime shipping companies like Maersk.
"The captain followed the appropriate protocol and authorized an embarked security team to fire warning shots in order for the pirates to turn away," the statement said.
Shortly after, the boat took off and the ship was headed to the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa.
Private security companies represent the preferred US solution to curbing piracy at sea, because when armed they have been 100% successful in preventing US flagged ships from being hijacked by pirates.
